Functional Studies

Before genetic variants can be used to predict antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG), the underlying molecular mechanisms need to be elucidated. A current study aims to identify the molecular mechanism through which antipsychotic drugs alter expression of the melanocortin-4-receptor (MC4R) gene. It is well known that MC4R plays a key role in modulating energy expenditure and appetite, and its gene variants have been shown to be highly associated with AIWG. These functional investigations will quantify MC4R gene levels in neuronal cells from patients with and without AIWG after treatment with antipsychotic drugs.
